defending

Defending my thesis on Friday, May 11. From the left, the opponent prof. Nancy Abelmann from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Custos or the officiator, prof. Jukka Siikala from the Dept. Social and Cultural Anthropology at the U. of Helsinki, and to the right the defendant giving his opening address, or Lectio Precursoria. (Click for a bigger pic to open in a new window.)

They say it all went well, even though things look so different from the perspective of the defendant.

핀란드아저씨들은 옷을 번지르하게 빼입었군요. 어쨌든 논문 완고 축하드립니다. 다운받았으니 여유있을 때 읽어볼께요. 학교를 시작해서 정신이 없군요.

Congradulations...

I remember a well-known prof of mine went to Sweden for a similar occasion for a candidate working on Neo-Confucianism and Environmentalism. The prof was very interested in how the defense of a phd thesis worked in Sweden. It is so different from what we do here in the US (at least in most places)...

Wow! I never realized that defending a thesis was so formal. Is there a dance afterwards? :)

Anyway, congratulations. I am sure you are glad to get that over with.
